In a surprising move, Google is set to launch a new weather app alongside its upcoming Pixel 9 series, according to a recent report by Android Authority. This development comes just a year after Google completely overhauled its existing weather section in the Google app.
The new app, part of the existing Pixel Weather app (com.google.android.apps.weather), will initially be preloaded on Pixel 9 devices before rolling out to older Pixel models. The publication obtained a non-final version of the app, offering a glimpse into Google’s vision for its latest weather application.
The redesign embraces minimalism, featuring a gradient background that adapts to current weather conditions. The most prominent element is the current temperature, displayed in bold font with an icon representing weather conditions replacing the degree symbol. Notably absent is the familiar weather frog, apparently sacrificed in the name of sleek design.
Below the temperature, users will find customizable cards displaying standard weather information such as hourly and 10-day forecasts, humidity, wind, and more. A unique feature allows users to reposition most of these cards permanently, offering a personalized experience.
The 10-day forecast screen and location selection interface have also received updates, maintaining the app’s streamlined aesthetic. Interestingly, the new version appears to lack the animations present in the current weather app, at least in the tested version.
It’s unclear why Google decided to switch things up in its Weather app, especially considering the fact that the app received an overhaul not too long ago. Either way, those who don’t quite like the Weather app right now can look forward to the upcoming app.
