Google’s ongoing effort to improve Android’s already robust notification system takes another step forward with Android 15. A new feature aims to simplify your notification experience by automatically hiding unused notification channels created by apps.

Android offers extensive control over notifications, including the option to manage them on a per-app and even per-category basis. Since Android 8.0, apps can use “notification channels” to categorize alerts (like a sales channel versus an order update channel). This gives users flexibility in how they receive and interact with notifications.

While notification channels are useful, some apps create too many, making them hard to sort through. Android 15 addresses this by hiding unused channels by default. This declutters your notification settings, making it easier to find the channels you actually care about. In Android 15, you’ll still be able to access and manage all notification channels. However, unused ones will be tucked away by default. A new “Show unused channels” toggle will let you reveal them if needed.

This change promises a more streamlined notification experience. Apps that overuse notification channels will no longer overwhelm your settings, making it simpler to find relevant alerts and customize your Android experience.

The update is currently in beta, with the stable version expected in Q3.
