Nope… 6.03" (rounded corners) and, if you prefer, 6.28" (full rectangle)

Could a true Google Pixel 5 successor finally be on the horizon? Recent rumors surrounding the upcoming Pixel 9 series initially suggested that a new compact model might be joining the lineup, featuring a 6.03-inch display — a size reminiscent of the beloved Pixel 5. While exciting, this news has been cut short by OnLeaks himself with a follow-up comment on X that implies Pixel 5 owners should instead be prepared for the possibility that their dream upgrade may remain just that – a dream.
The source behind the leaked Pixel 9 renders initially suggested that a 6.03-inch display was in tow, but he has since clarified a crucial detail. The actual screen size is 6.28 inches, with the initial figure accounting for rounded corners. This means the standard Pixel 9 will not only be larger than the Pixel 5, but also the current Pixel 8.
Furthermore, this revised dimension aligns with the renders, which depicted a taller Pixel 9 frame (152.8 x 71.9 x 8.5mm) compared to the Pixel 8 (150.5 x 70.8 x 8.9 mm). In effect, the standard Pixel 9 is on track to sport a display closer to 6.3 inches, a far cry from the compact form factor many Pixel 5 owners were hoping for.
Sure, a compact Pixel 9 would have been a true successor and massive draw for Pixel 5 owners and even others longing for a smaller device without sacrificing the latest Pixel features. However, the disappointment extends beyond Google’s own history. In a market increasingly dominated by larger smartphones, the prospect of a compact Pixel 9 seemed like a rare beacon of hope. And this news further highlights a continuing industry trend.
Apple, for instance, is rumored to equip even its base iPhone 16 models with a 6.2-inch display. This leaves little room for Google to go smaller. Additionally, Asus, a champion of compact phones with its ZenFone series, appears to have abandoned that philosophy with its latest ZenFone 11 Ultra, further diminishing options for small phone enthusiasts. While compact phone lovers might hold out a sliver of hope for a surprise from Google, the Pixel 9 seems unlikely to fulfill their wish. If anything, it appears the search for a true successor to the Pixel 5’s convenient form factor continues.
Google will announce the Pixel 9 series later this year, so we still have some time to enjoy the leaks, speculations and rumors. Meanwhile, here’s a great video looking into what led us to this point with small phones:
