Google has begun rolling out its February 2024 security update to Pixel devices, including the newest Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. While the update itself focuses primarily on bug fixes and security patches, Pixel 8 users have something extra to look forward to: a camera update bringing stability and performance improvements.

While details of the new camera update remain scarce, the official changelog simply mentions “general improvements for system stability and performance in certain conditions” specifically for Pixel 8 cameras. This suggests that Pixel 8 users should experience better camera performance and fewer stability issues after installing both updates. Below is how part of the changelog reads:

The latest Pixel 8 camera app update bumps the version number from v9.2.113.585804376.14 to v9.2.113.600672654.18, which is a minor jump that shouldn’t bring any major features. If you own a Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, now would be the perfect time to check the Google Play Store for the update, but it may take a few days to reach all devices. The update has already popped up on our Pixel 8 and 8 Pro units, but it’s not showing up on the Pixel 7a. But this is expected since, as noted, it’s only Pixel 8 devices getting this update.

Alternatively, the latest version can also be downloaded from APK Mirror and installed manually.

While we await Google’s official details about the specific improvements, which is unlikely to happen, Pixel 8 and 8 Pro users with any camera concerns should consider updating both the security patch and the camera app to see if it resolves their issues. Remember, the bigger March Feature Drop with potentially more substantial camera improvements is just around the corner, so there’s even more to look forward to in a few weeks’ time.
