Google Pixel 8 Pro users have several exclusive features that aren’t available on the vanilla model or older Pixel devices. A camera feature called Video Boost, that has the ability to enhance the videos, is only available on the Pro variant. And now, Google has added another camera feature called Ultrawide astrophotography on the Pixel 8 Pro.

This mode was initially introduced in 2020 with the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5. It allows users to capture long-exposure shots of the night sky using the ultra-wide camera. However, Google withdrew this capability a few months after its debut on the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5. Now, this feature has made a comeback, and this time it is exclusively available on the Pixel 8 Pro.

The company didn’t state the reason for its removal from Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5. But it’s speculated that it might have been due to concerns related to image quality. Interestingly, this feature is currently limited to the Pixel 8 Pro. It is assumed that this limitation might be due to the 48MP sensor present on the Pro model. The Pro variant is more capable of taking high-quality shots compared to the vanilla Pixel 8, which has a 12MP sensor.

We also tested out using our Google Pixel 7a, but the feature was missing from the device. You can check it out below:

The revival of this feature means that Pixel 8 Pro users can now capture a more expansive view of the night sky. If you’re an owner of the Pixel 8 Pro, you can check out this feature by accessing the Night Mode on your camera and adjusting the zoom to 0.5x.
