AI DJ is an innovative feature introduced by Spotify in February 2023, aimed at enhancing the music listening experience for users.

This cutting-edge technology utilizes personalized AI to curate and select music based on individual preferences, effectively functioning as a personalized guide through the vast musical landscape.

Spotify AI DJ keeps playing the same recently played songs

While the concept sounds promising, some Spotify users have voiced their frustration, claiming that the AI DJ keeps playing the same recently played songs (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8).

This feature is designed to provide users with quick access to the songs they have enjoyed in the past. It serves as a convenient way to revisit a favorite track or rediscover something that caught their attention.

However, Spotify’s AI DJ algorithm fails to deliver a varied selection and instead becomes fixated on a small subset of recently played songs.

This diminishes the user experience and undermines the purpose of the feature.

Liked it at first but it seems to be play a lot of the same/similar selections and its random editorial picks I find are completely unconnected to anything I’m into. Feel like there’s potential but without any sort of settings I find it’s a mixed bag lately.

My Spotify DJ just seems to play the same songs in the same order every time I leave and come back, is that the same with everyone else? It’s like that on my Android phone and Windows 10, so I have a hunch that it’s meant to be designed like that. Spotify’s whole marketing for the DJ is that it plays new stuff you haven’t listened to, but for me it just behaves as a glorified playlist.

Initially, users have reported that the AI DJ recommendations were more diverse and introduced them to new music, but overtime it started repeating same songs (1,2,3).

One of the potential causes of this problem lies in the algorithm powering the AI DJ tool. Although Spotify’s algorithm is undoubtedly sophisticated, it may not be as ‘smart’ as users expect it to be.

The algorithm might interpret the user’s desire to listen to their favorite songs again as a preference for repetition, rather than understanding that users want a blend of familiar tracks and new recommendations.

It is important to note that the AI DJ feature is still in beta and has not undergone a widespread rollout. As a result, some of the shortcomings experienced by users are expected during this testing phase.

Additionally, the occurrence of other bugs, such as the AI DJ getting stuck, can be seen as clear indicators of the current beta status of the feature.

Agreed. It also gets stuck sometimes. If I’m not liking the genre usually I can just hit the DJ button and it will switch it up. But sometimes it won’t pick anything new and in fact it just plays the same playlist over and over again

Spotify’s competitors are always ready to capture dissatisfied users, and addressing this problem promptly is crucial to maintain a loyal user base.
