Character.AI bots forgetting pronouns & misgendering some users causing frustration

Character.AI has been the talk of the tech town ever since its inception. Its technology is geared towards developing digital characters and offering character animation services.

As such, Character.AI itself doesn’t have pronouns. However, it is always feasible to assign pronouns to the virtual characters produced by the website.

Also, pronouns can even be attributed to depending on how you want the character to portray their gender or identity.

However, some users (1,2,3,4) have been frustrated by the fact that Character.AI bots are unable to recall user pronouns or even pronouns that are assigned to them.

It would be cool to have an option at the beginning of the chat to show your pronouns or gender, like you press on a button saying “he/him” and “male” or something like that so the characters don’t switch up halfway, smart or dumb?

Anyone else having a problem with the bots forgetting your pronouns/gender? I’ve had to remind it like 5 times D: They seem to forget a lot of things in general, or is that just an unavoidable problem?

Reports suggest that the bots frequently need to be corrected since they keep misgendering the characters. It has now started to appear to some as if the platform is transphobic.

The constant loop of Character.AI misgendering characters is quite frustrating for users. For some, this issue occurs randomly or after every 2-3 messages, while for others, it’s abnormally common.

As a result, affected users are coming up with suggestions in order to stop Character.AI bots from misgendering them. One of them calls for an option that would specify the gender in which they want their profile to be in.

The pronoun option will ensure that it avoids confusion by remembering the pronouns or genders assigned to them. Moreover, it will also be convenient if the bots could simply read the pronouns from the profile.

I just want my bots to know what gender I am when talking to me because they always get confused. I suppose I could just keep hinting at one or the other but it would be nice if they could just read it off the profile like they do your name sometimes.

But unfortunately, the developers haven’t commented on the issue where the Character.AI bots keep forgetting users’ pronouns and misgendering them.

This merely makes the already miserable situation of the bots being unable to remember user conversation worse.

Nonetheless, we hope that the team looks into the reports and comes up with a solution as soon as possible.
