Here’s the crux of the article in video form:

Discord recently introduced a new feature called ‘Voice Message‘ that allows users to send voice notes in DMs, GDMs, and servers with fewer than 200 members on mobile.

Voice messages are audio recordings that can be sent and listened to at any time, without having to join a voice channel or start a voice call. They are meant to be faster than typing and more personal than text chat.

However, not everyone is happy with the new feature, especially with the location of the voice message button on the mobile app (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8).

The Voice Message button is placed next to the emoji button on the right side of the chat input box, and users have to press and hold it to record a voice message.

Some users have complained that the button is too easy to accidentally press, especially when they are trying to access the emoji menu or type a message.

They have also reported that they have accidentally sent voice messages that they did not intend to send, or that they have received unwanted voice messages from others.

A few individuals have requested that Discord move the voice message button or give an option to disable it completely.

I personally will never use voice messages and it’s very annoying how buttons are moving around server to server, makes it supper hard to get muscle memory for where things are.

I know it’s in the beta stages (right?) But it’s kind of annoying that the Voice message button is set up as the Send Message button…until you start typing a message. Sometimes I just want to send an emoji but instead I click on the Voice Message button. It’s really inconvenient!

Users have also requested that Discord should add a confirmation prompt before sending a voice message, or allow them to delete or edit their voice messages after sending them (1,2).

Please add a confirmation when sending voice messages. It’s very easy for your hand to slip onto the side of the screen, or the app to lag and accidentally send an audio message.

Potential workaround

Among the reports, there is also a possible workaround that can mitigate the issue. Basically, you can use the older Discord version if you don’t want the feature:

For anyone who keeps accidentally clicking “Voice Message” when they just want emojis, here’s the version right before they updated it!

That said, we’ll keep track of the situation and post an update if and when there are any further developments regarding the matter.
