[Updated: Jan. 18] PlayStation (PSN) party chat not working? You aren't alone

Are you experiencing issue with PlayStation party chat feature? Well, find solace in the fact that you aren’t alone. We’re currently seeing a lot of reports from users of Sony’s gaming consoles who say party chat keeps disconnecting for them.

Take a look at some of the reports:


For its part, as far as PlayStation social media handles are concerned, Sony is yet to say anything about this issue. Rest assured, we are keeping an active tab on the matter, and will update the story as and when the problem gets fixed or there’s any more newsworthy development.

Update 1 (March 14)

Users are again getting a playstation party related issue (error NW-31473-8). Head here for details.

Update 2 (Nov 15)

Going by reports proliferating across Twitter, Playstation is down and not working for many right now. Users aren’t able to play online or use party chat. Here are some of the reports:

@PlayStation your servers have to be the worst to ever fucking exist

@PlayStation what’s wrong with party chat and friends list. Nothing’s loading and internet is fine!!!

@PlayStation Why aren’t any of my parties connecting? Why aren’t my friends lists showing? Why’s my profile saying im offline, Even though when i test my connection and everything is fine? #PSNDOWN

Downdetector also reflects the service is encountering issues in some regions, as can be seen in the live map below.

Update 3 (Nov 15)

Going by Ask Playstation JP’s recent tweet, PSN as well as PS Store won’t be available for some time.

[PlayStation Network failure information] PSN (including PS Store) may not be available at this time. Thank you for your patience as we investigate and recover. http://askps.eng.mg/7d7ca

Update 4 (Nov 15)

PSN service status page has been updated conveying gaming-related issues stating:

Affected Platforms: PS4™
Affected Services:
You may have some difficulty launching games, applications or online features. Our engineers are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, and we thank you for your patience.

Update 5 (Feb 08, 2020)

Fresh reports indicate PSN party chat feature is again experiencing issues today.

However, the PSN service status page currently shows no known problems.

Update 6 (April 13, 2020)

Bungie help has officially acknowledged the butterfly errors that many play station players are experiencing. Here’s how they explain the issue:

You may have some difficulty launching games, applications or online features. Our engineers are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, and we thank you for your patience.

Update 7 (April 13, 2020)

The issue appears to have been resolved.

Issues causing some PS4 players in Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 to encounter BUTTERFLY errors have subsided.


Update 8 (April 23, 2020)

Play Station is down and Party chat is not working for many as of writing this. Take a look at what some of the affected have to say:

@PlayStation @AskPlayStation It seems parties are down, invites aren’t getting through and when they were we were stuck on the joining screen and unable to connect!

PlayStation is down. Party chat list is unavailable and is giving me an error code “NP- 39225-1” and modern warfare isn’t working “a required network service has failed”

While Downdetector also reflects service issues, the PSN service status page, however, conveys no known issues.

Update 9 (April 23, 2020)

The problem has been officially acknowledged, and here’s what the PSN service status page reads:

Update 10 (April 24, 2020)

Play Station is down once again. Down detector also conveys the outage.

Update 10 (April 26, 2020)

PSN is down and not working as of writing this. Apart from reports on Twitter, down detector also conveys the same. The service status page, however, doesn’t reflect any issue.

Update 11 (June 3, 2022)

Many gamers have taken to Twitter to report that the Friend list is not loading for them. Unfortunately, the support team has not yet acknowledged this issue.

Update 12 (January 18, 2023)

PSN (PlayStation Network) party chat feature is currently down or not working, affecting PS4 and PS5 console users alike (1, 2, 3).

Update 13 (January 18, 2023)

The lack of new reports related to the issue indicates that the PSN party chat feature is working properly again.
