‘Routines’ are one of the best features of Google Assistant. It helps users in automating multiple actions with the use of a single command.

Google offers predefined routines but also gives users the ability to create fully custom ones according to their needs. Routines work on phones, tablets, and smart devices like Google Home or Nest.

But many Google Nest users have had their fair share of issues with this feature like Home and Away routines setup option missing or when the routines and family bells started going off a minute early.

Now, a new problem has surfaced where the bedtime routine is not turning off automatically for Google Home or Nest users (1,2,3,4,5,6,7).

With the use of routine features, Google Home or Nest users can set a timer on when the sleep sounds can turn off automatically.

However, due to a bug, the sleep sounds are playing in a loop all night even when the bedtime routine is set to last 1 or 2 hours.

This has been quite an annoying issue as Nest owners wake up to their devices still playing the sounds and they have to manually switch it off every day.

The google speaker has started to play the google sleep sounds all through the night. Up to last week (Aug ‘22) the speaker would play the sounds for 60 mins. Now the speaker plays these all through the night. Please help.

I have the ‘country sounds’ playing as part of my bedtime routine. Until recently, they would stop playing on their own after some time (1 or 2 hours). Now they play all night and don’t stop at all until I ask my google assistant to turn them off. How can I get them to turn off after an hour or two again?

Some have tried troubleshooting methods like setting up a new routine, unplugging their devices, and resetting it as well. But none of them seem to work.

Issue already escalated for investigation

Fortunately, a Gold Product Expert in Google’s community forum confirmed that the issue has already been escalated to the development team.

Update 1 (September 7, 2022)

12:36 pm (IST): A Redditor has suggested a potential workaround for the issue where bedtime routine or sleep sound is not turning off. You can try and see if it helps.

I set up my own routine to make sure it plays for X hours.

Alternatively, say something like “play thunderstorms for X hours”. (Source)
