[Update: Mar. 4] Some hope for Xiaomi Redmi 6/6A & Redmi Y3 users as Redmi 7 bags MIUI 12 stable update (Download link inside)

New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on January 25, 2021) follows:

Xiaomi’s MIUI is arguably one of the most feature-packed skins of the Android world. The company made sure to add every feature imaginable and is continually working hard on doing so.

And as if MIUI 11 wasn’t enough, the company had announced MIUI 12 back in April, following which several of their upper range devices began to receive it a month or so later.

      MIUI-12-1

Xiaomi also had released an official list of devices eligible for the same and among them were Redmi 6/6A, Redmi Y3, and the Redmi 7. However, soon after, things took a turn for the worse.

It came to light last month that Xiaomi had shelved MIUI 12 update plans for Redmi 7, Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and Redmi Y3 due to compatibility and performance issues.

This did not seem too unreasonable considering that MIUI 12 has been pretty demanding on the resources. And the fact that Xiaomi disabled Gaussian blurring on some devices testifies to this.

Nevertheless, the company shouldn’t have made a promise if they were going to break it. Or were they?

Quite unexpectedly, MIUI 12 has now made an appearance out of the blue for the Xiaomi Redmi 7. That too a stable build. And this comes after seemingly no indications about any beta testing being present for the device.

A very pleasant surprise, to say the least. Although it is important to mention here that the Redmi 7 was only released back in March 2019 and was hence always eligible for the update.

Furthermore, if a device like Redmi 7 is capable of handling MIUI 12 just fine, then the Redmi 6/6A and the Redmi Y3 are as well.

Hopefully, like in the case of the former, MIUI 12 is just around the corner for the older Redmi 6 and the gang as well.

Keep in mind though that it’s a China build. An update for other regions should be expected soon as well.

Perhaps, it is too much to ask for a MIUI 12.5 update from Xiaomi following these events. But in case you are still interested, be sure to go through our MIUI 12.5 update tracker for all information about it.

      Update 1 (March 04)

12:49 pm (IST): The global variant of the Redmi 7 may never see the light of MIUI 12 as a community mod recently stated that plans for the same have been binned owing to ‘incompatibility and performance issues’.
