[Updated: Jan 14] OnePlus 8 Pro Widevine L1 reportedly downgraded to L3 after recent update for some

New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on May 11, 2020) follows:

It seems like OnePlus has gotten themselves in trouble once again with their recently launched OnePlus 8 Pro. Previously, we have reported that the OnePlus 8 Pro units were plagued with the green-tint and black crush display issue.

And going by several users reports on the official OnePlus community and reports on Reddit, the OnePlus 8 Pro users are reporting a downgrade in Widevine DRM, from L1 to L3, after the recent update.

The last update that the device received was OxygenOS 10.5.6, which was basically meant to fix the green-tint and black crush issue on the device. However, by the looks of it, it has brought along with it a new bug for the OnePlus 8 Pro.

Some of the users have also brought to notice that this issue was triggered after the update version 10.5.5, and is still there even after the OxygenOS 10.5.6 update.

Well, point to note is that not all the users are affected by this issue, but the number of users that are reporting this downgrade from Widevine L1 to L3, are considerably good in a number.

Here you can check out some of the user reports:

After the 15.5.5 update, Netflix only playing in SD. Seems Widevine DRM downgraded to L3 from L1.

I can confirm that this is the case on my OP8P right now too. Bootloader locked. Just logged in netflix after years to check this out. Prime video is certainly SD as well. In the DRM info app it’s L3 for me too.

I watched 4K UHD content in Prime video yesterday before i run the 2 updates on OP8P, so im pretty sure it’s on their end.

same problem here. Never unlock the bootloader but winevine is l3. Mine is on 10.5.6

      widevine l3

My stock oneplus 8 pro can only playback video on Netflix at sd quality. I checked my Widevine and it shows L3. It was L1 before I update my phone to 10.5.5

I tried uninstalling Netflix app, rebooting the phone, clearing the cache but didn’t solve the problem. Please help

However, as mentioned earlier, there are several users that have reported that they are not having any issues in streaming HD content on their OnePlus 8 Pro even with the OxygenOS 10.5.6 update and their DRM is set at Widevine L1.

Looking fine here. I’m on 10.5.6 and Wildwine in the Netflix app ist still in L1.

I have L1 in my device, just checked it, prob something with your Netflix app?

Fortunately, one of the users of the OnePlus 8 Pro has confirmed that OnePlus has acknowledged this issue, however, it is yet to roll out any fix for the same.

So, at the moment, all the affected users can only do one thing and that is, to wait for any official solution to resolve this matter, which probably will be done via a bugfix update. Rest assured, we will keep our eyes on the lookout for any further developments in this matter.

      Update (January 14)

IST 9:30am: After several months and a new Android version later, users of the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are still facing the same Widevine issue.

A scroll through the forums and you’ll run into numerous reports of OnePlus 8 Pro (1,2,3,4,5,6) and OnePlus 8 users noting that the latest update, OxygenOS 11.0.3.3, still didn’t address the Widevine issue.
