New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on October 22, 2020) follows:

Samsung is busy with its Android 11-based One UI 3.0 update but that does not mean that the OEM has left older devices behind.

Most OEMs provide three years of software support to their devices and that includes major OS updates as well as monthly security updates.

However, there are times when OEMs have to provide some critical updates to older devices even after their software support has ended.

Samsung might be planning for something similar for the five-year-old Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+.

Both devices were released in 2015 with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box while their software support ended with Android 7.0 Nougat.

Now, it seems that Samsung might soon be serving a new software update to the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+, at least in Korea.

This might simply be because of some security vulnerabilities found in the current software version of both devices.

So, users should not expect any major changes as the new update will simply come as a security vulnerability patch.

It must be noted from the above CheckFirm app screenshot shared on the Samsung Community that both the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Note 5 are currently sitting on build DRG3, but a newer version DTJ2 is being tested.

While it is unclear when the OEM will start rolling out the new update, users should not look forward to an OS update or even an updated security patch level.

Samsung has been pretty active this year especially when it comes to software updates. The OEM has already promised three OS updates for several devices. More on that here and here.

And now this new information about the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ update clearly suggests that the OEM will stop at nothing when it comes to device security.
