Sprint OnePlus 8 can't reliably make calls after recent update, fix coming soon

5G NR (New Radio) is the next big thing especially in terms of mobile networks. Devices like the OnePlus 8 series, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G, Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, and Galaxy S20+ 5G support New Radio on various networks including Sprint.

While T-Mobile is currently the only network service provider which offers Standalone 5G network service, Sprint is also among the top network service providers to offer New Radio services albeit Non-standalone.

However, users have been facing some issues while making calls on their Sprint OnePlus 8 after the September update. Many subscribers are taking to online platforms like Reddit to share their concerns regarding the calling issues on Sprint 5G network after the September update.

As per a user report, they are experiencing call dropping issues on their Sprint OnePlus 8 while making calls over 5G VoLTE. Also, the user has mentioned that they have been experiencing this problem after the September update.

Also, the status appears as unconnected in the call details. Another user reported that they are unable to make calls after updating the network profile on their OnePlus 8. However, the 5G data services seems to work for them and the problem only arises while making calls.

Apart from that, the user has also stated that the problem gets fixed after resetting the network settings but the network switches to LTE. This clearly indicates that the latest Sprint update might have triggered these issues on the carrier-locked OnePlus 8.

It must be noted that Sprint is now a part of T-Mobile and a T-Mobile subscriber has also shared some information about similar issues stating that the information comes from T-Mobile support.

As per the shared information, devices including the OnePlus 8 5G, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G, Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, and Galaxy S20+ 5G are affected by the known issue which causes dropped calls, inconsistent 5G data, unable to receive calls, and unable to receive SMS.

For further clarification, Sprint has updated its community page acknowledging the issue on OnePlus 8 after the September update version 10.5.20.IN55CB. Here’s the official acknowledgement post from Sprint:

Customers may not be able to reliably dial out (make phone calls) after updating to the September software release: 10.5.20.IN55CB. You can receive calls without issue.

Customers may observe when placing calls they will hear ringing and when the person they are calling answers that the phone dialer app will close.

The network service provider has also stated that the issue is being looked into and a new software update will be deployed on September 26, 2020. Also, the faulty software version 10.5.20.IN55CB has been pulled by Sprint.

Users are also advised to avoid performing a factory data reset or going for a device exchange as the problem will might still be present until the fix arrives. That said, we will provide further details when more information becomes available.
