[Updated] Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S calls audio issue reported to devs, fix should come soon (probably alongside MIUI 12?)

This story is being continuously updated…. New updates are being added at the bottom…..

Original story (published on September 17, 2020) follows:

No single piece of software is perfect. The same is true for many software running on most Android devices today. That is why we get regular security patches and bug-fix updates.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S was unveiled earlier this year and it ran Android 10 out of the box with the company’s own custom Android skin, MIUI 11. The device is in line for an update to MIUI 12 but that hasn’t been rolled out yet.

Powered by the Snapdragon 720G, this device promises solid power and performance to anyone in the market for a decent mid-range device but isn’t too keen to break the bank while at it.

Sadly though, the Note 9S is not without its flaws. According to a section of users of the device (1, 2, 3), it has a rather annoying bug that has everything to do with the call audio. Apparently, users of the Note 9S cannot be heard on the other end of the line when making and receiving normal calls. Other VoIP services like WhatsApp work just fine.

So my what’s app call audio works fine but the moment I make a normal phone call there is no audio. From either side. I can’t hear the caller and they can’t hear me. I’ve restarted my phone and checked for updates. And my what’s app calls audio works. Any idea ??

Understandably, this is a frustrating bug and a number of affected users have taken to the social forums to inquire from Xiaomi on what exactly the company is doing to fix this issue.

When will this earpiece issue will be fixed.?? Like many other users, my earpiece stops working for several days. Have tried everything but no solution fixes the problem. Serious help needed

Some users have reported this issue affecting even other calls like WhatsApp calls. While this is a permanent issue for some, others have had success fixing this bug by restarting their devices.

In response to one of these complaints on the Mi Community Forum, a moderator proceeds to confirm that this is a known issue. He further goes to confirm that developers are aware of this issue and a fix could be coming soon.

Seeing as this device is in line for an update to MIUI 12 and that is the biggest update that is imminent, could this mean that this call audio issue on Redmi Note 9S will be addressed in the MIUI 12 build? We can only wait and see.

You might want to keep an eye on our dedicated MIUI 12 tracker to be first to know when the update drops. Also, you can check out our dedicated Xiaomi section for these and many more Xiaomi stories.

      Update 1 (September 24)

New developments suggest that the call audio issue is also affecting Redmi Note 9 Pro users in the same was as Redmi Note 9S users. According to a moderator, the issue will be fixed in an upcoming update thus users may have to wait a bit. Here’s the mod’s comment:

Yes. It is a known issue and already reported. Kindly wait for a bug fix.

      Update 2 (October 21)
