Sony Xperia XZ1, XZ Premium, XZ3/XZ3 Compact get CarbonROM 8.0 (Android 10) support
Android being an open-source platform means that the development of software is not restricted to Android OEMs alone. There is a huge community of developers dedicated to creating alternative Android-based firmware for a number of popular models and brands.
Of course, this is heavily dependent on the co-operation of the OEM in terms of making the kernel source code available to developers but by and large the after-market firmware ecosystem is healthy today more than ever.
Popular Custom ROM, CarbonROM is today, adding official support for a bunch of Sony Xperia devices for its Android 10-based release, CarbonROM 8. This build brings all the AOSP Android 10 features and a few more in-house tweaks that are exclusive to CarbonROM.
This firmware that is based on LineageOS is now available for the following Sony devices:
This, no doubt, comes as a breath of fresh air to owners of this device seeing as recently, Sony ruled out the possibility of some of these devices getting updated to Android 10.
And I suppose that was the essence of the aftermarket Android firmware support in the first place, to extend the life of Android devices beyond the few years that it is officially supported by the OEM.
This, therefore, means that users of the above-mentioned devices can now unlock their bootloaders and flash this Custom ROM and get all Android 10 features anyway with CarbonROM 8. Also, CarbonROM has been known to support its devices for quite a while so these Sony device owners are pretty much sorted for the foreseeable future.
