Xiaomi Mi A1 is the first from the company to drop by without the popular MIUI skin baked on top of Android OS. At the time, it had Android Nougat running the show, albeit a clean one thanks to Android One.

The promise of Android One is more than just clean software. The program, launched in 2014 but peaked in 2017, also aims to deliver consistent security updates for up to three years and at least two major OS upgrades.

By all means, this is what you get with the Mi A1, which is now receiving the latest March 2020 security patch. That’s pretty cool for a $200 smartphone into its third year in the hands of some owners.

The update is arriving over the air as software version V10.0.19.0.PDHMIXM, up from the previous version V10.0.18.0.PDHMIXM that came with February patches. The OTA size, for some reason, varies, with some getting a 74.3MB package while others are receiving 77.95MB.

Again, it’s not clear why the OTA sizes are slightly different. Also, we can’t tell whether this update enables Jio and Airtel VoWiFi support on the Mi A1, but you can let us know once you install the March update on your unit.

On the other side, what is quite clear is that any hopes of the Mi A1 Android 10 update keep fading away with the release of every Pie-based security patch.

Whether the petition filed by hopeful Mi A1 owners to get Xiaomi to provide the third OS upgrade to Android 10 for this device will bear fruits remains unknown.

On the brighter side, the Mi A1, like many other Xiaomi devices, is developer-friendly. Matter of fact, you can already get your hands on an Android 10-based LineageOS 17.1 custom ROM for the Mi A1 right now.

If interested, check it out here. For now, what seems certain is that the Mi A1 will keep receiving monthly security patches, which is still welcome.

Below is the download link for the latest Mi A1 March security update, at least for those who haven’t received the OTA download notification. You can also check out the official announcement post here.

Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
