Moto G6 & G6 Play February security patch rolls out while users await Android 10 update

Moto G6 & G6 Play February security patch rolls out while users await Android 10 update

Motorola now (after the acquisition by Lenovo) is not the same company it used to be. The company now no more release security updates very punctually, and the Pie update was delayed as well. Now, the same is expected with the Android update as well.

Though the company has already released the Android 10 update for a few phones, there are many devices that are yet to get the latest Android update. And, at a time when Moto users are waiting for Android 10 update, the company has come up with Android Pie-based security update for two of its devices.

Motorola today rolled out the February security patch for the Moto G6 and G6 Play. As per the screenshot shared by Reddit users, the February security patch for the Moto G6 carries the version PPSS29.55-37-7-6, while for G6 Play, the version is PPPS29.118-68-5.

This latest patch is only a security update that bumps the security patches for up to February 1, 2020. These latest updates will be welcomed by the Moto G6 and G6 Play users, even though they are concerned more about the Android 10 update for their device.

However, expecting Android 10 update for these devices is a bit farfetched dream, considering the company’s software update policy about the Moto G family. Motorola’s general practice is to push only one OS upgrade for the Moto G devices.

Motorola has followed the same policy since the G4 Plus, which by mistake got two OS updates. At the time, the company cleared that it follows a policy of one major OS upgrade per device. Motorola said:

Since the time of posting this, we have learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus. It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O

Motorola support said something similar when asked about the Android 10 update for the Moto G6 Plus, which came in 2018. The support said that the device has already got the update (Android 9) planned for it.

Considering Moto G6 and G6 Play are also 2018 devices that came with Android 8 and were later upgraded to Android 9.0 Pie, expecting Android 10 update for them may not be officially right.

Nevertheless, we can’t say it with surety unless the company specifically confirms it. We will update the story in case there is any information on the Android 10 update for the Moto G6 and G6 Play.
