[Out in China] BREAKING: Xperia 1 & Xperia 5 getting stable Android 10 update from Sony

New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on December 5, 2019) follows:

Earlier this year, Google invited a bunch of OEMs to participate in the beta testing initiative of Android Q (the ‘Android 10‘ moniker was not finalized then). Sony also took part in this venture and included Xperia XZ3 as the guinea pig in the experiment.

Later on, the Japanese OEM went one step further and published a very informative guide to build vanilla Android 10 for some of their devices as Google updated the AOSP codebase. Thanks to the Open Devices program, developers can grab Android 10-compatible binaries without much hassle.

However, Sony did not announce any kind of public beta of Android 10 for their lineup. A tentative roadmap came from NTT Docomo in mid-October regarding the stable OTA, which was later confirmed by Sony itself via an official statement.

Owners of Sony’s premium flagship Xperia 1 and recently announced Xperia 5 will be among the first to receive the new tech, which will be available this December.

Owners of Xperia 10, 10 Plus, XZ2, XZ2 Compact, XZ2 Premium, and XZ3 devices can expect to access the upgrade early 2020 onwards.

Guess what? The long-anticipated update is finally live! Tagged as software version 55.1.A.0.748, the stable Android 10 OTA is hitting both Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 units across the globe.

The phone duo grabbed October security update a couple of weeks ago. Naturally, the not-so-large incremental update also packs November patch for Xperia 1 as well as Xperia 5. Well, December would be better, but who cares?

Sony has also updated the AOSP binaries on November 29, but they are yet to publish the kernel source of the build which is currently rolling out. Judging from the user feedback, both European and US variants are getting the update, albeit staged rollout might hamper the joy.

Nonetheless, you can directly download the updated firmware from Sony servers using tools like XperiFirm. You still need a flashing utility, such as Flashtool, to proceed further.

Apparently someone lost the ability to make calls or use mobile data after taking the OTA, so don’t join the bandwagon just yet. You know, OEMs often pull back the initial build of a major update and re-release it with proper fixes.

      I just updated to this @ 12/04/19 8pm est.

I no longer have the ability to use cell for calls or data. The option is greyed out. It says it cannot detect a sim card. I cannot send texts or use the data internet. Just WiFi.

I recommend waiting a short while before updating to this as it could cause a serious inconvenience if you are in the middle of your day.

      Update 1 (January 29, 2020)

The stable version of Android 10 for Xperia 1/5 is finally rolling out in Europe. The OTA brings a new build (55.1.A.3.49) with January 2020 security patch. Details here.

      Update 2 (March 10)

Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 users in China also report of getting the Android 10 update now.
