New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on December 30, 2019) follows:

Google recommends that Android smartphone vendors release at least two major OS upgrades to their devices. This is despite the search giant offering three major releases for its Google Pixel phones.

But with software being one of its major selling points, OnePlus has been quick to emulate Google by providing three OS upgrades to its devices. It started with the OnePlus 3 and 3T that got upgraded from Marshmallow to Pie.

In September, OnePlus revealed that the OnePlus 5 and 5T will both receive updates to HydrogenOS based on Android 10 at some point in Q2 2020. OnePlus warned that it won’t be in any hurry to push the update, instead the process will take time in order to fashion out a bug-free experience.

A couple of weeks later, OnePlus also confirmed the expected release dates for OxygenOS 10 based on Android 10 for the global 5 and 5T handsets.

Until then, the best you can expect from OnePlus is security patches and optimizations, but having been around since 2017, the duo no longer receives monthly security updates, instead, they come in after two or so months as per the update policy announced by the Chinese OEM.

The last time OnePlus updated the 5 and 5T is back in October with October security patches. Today, the duo is now receiving their December security patches, which do bundle patches from November as well.

Unfortunately, though, the update is still limited to the Chinese variants of OnePlus 5 and 5T – the models that have HydrogenOS running on top of Android. The update also addresses some known issues that OnePlus hasn’t gone into specifics.

With OnePlus now done with updating other devices to Android 10, it’s hard not to think that the next HydrogenOS update for OnePlus 5 and 5T will be based on Android 10. This is especially true given that the duo doesn’t receive monthly updates, but it’ll probably be in beta.

The story shouldn’t be different for the global OxygenOS-based models, although this should happen after they get their December security updates as well. The wait for the update to arrive may take a week or two from now.

Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
