New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Xiaomi fans know about the company’s confusing naming scheme for its phones. In fact, keeping tabs on each release, especially now that Redmi is on its own, can be an uphill task.

For the few of us who follow these things religiously, we’ve gotten used to this murky way of doing things. Matter of fact, Xiaomi isn’t stopping anytime soon, with reports of a certain Mi CC9 Pro in the works, the third variant in the camera-centric CC9 series.

One of the variants in the CC9 series – the Mi CC9e – is sold globally as the Mi A3 with Android One and another – Mi CC9 – as the Mi 9 Lite. As far as the Redmi S2 is concerned – a device that is now receiving its stable update to MIUI 11 – those in India know it as the Redmi Y2.

The Redmi S2 is the device’s name in markets outside India, but the incoming MIUI 11 stable software update is still limited to the Chinese market and not necessarily any market outside India.

Arriving as version MIUI 11.0.1.0.PEFCNXM, the update bundles all the new skins UI changes, features, and performance improvements. However, you still get to deal with the older Android 9 Pie OS.

Redmi Y2/S2

Having arrived preinstalled with Android Oreo, the Redmi S2/Y2 got to Android Pie via a software update. Whether Xiaomi has plans to give the device a second major OS upgrade remains to be seen, but knowing the company, MIUI updates are the best you can expect going forward.

The fact that the Redmi Note 4 is still receiving MIUI updates says it all, but for now, the Redmi S2 MIUI 11 update is up for grabs, at least for those using the China ROM.

Since the update is airborne, it will take time before all Redmi S2 units receive the download notification. You can either wait for the OTA or download the ROM using the link below and install it manually.

  • Device: Redmi S2
  • Codename: ysl
  • Channel: China Stable
  • Version: 11.0.1.0.PEFCNXM
  • Android: 9.0
    • Type: Recovery
      • Download: Link
      • MD5: 0758598825f11a5e3f8e925ff2d873f8

For folks using the global ROM, the Redmi S2 MIUI 11 update shouldn’t be too far away. The story should be the same for the Redmi Y2 MIUI 11 update. We will keep an eye on both cases and update this post.

Update (November 2)

MIUI 11 is finally available via global stable channel for Redmi S2/Y2 smartphones. Details here.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
