AT&T LG G6 Android Pie (9.0) stable update goes live, Canada gets it too

Releasing a flagship phone with older SoC is a way to bypass the initial demand-supply fiasco, but the stance has plenty of adverse effects. For example, LG opted for one year old Snapdragon 821 chipset while designing 2017’s LG G6. As a consequence, the phone might not receive Android 10 update at all!

Besides Google Pixel 2 (XL) and Essential Phone (these phones already received stable Android 10 update), 2017’s OnePlus 5/5T are scheduled to receive the tenth iteration of Android in the coming months. You don’t need to be a detective to guess that these phones feature same SoC – Snapdragon 835.

Thanks to the older platform and associated legacy kernel (3.18), LG G6 users are stuck with Oreo for a long time. After a brief amount of beta testing in the home country, the Korean OEM finally pushed stable Pie update to several European countries as well as on the Verizon branded edition of LG G6 (VS988).

Interestingly, the Canadian LG G6 (H873) users are having a peculier experience regarding since long-anticipated update. Several carriers confirmed that the phone should get the OTA by October 16, but it did not happen.

A few days ago, Fido (a subsidiary of Rogers) published an updated roadmap which clearly indicated that the new release date as October 23. Guess what? The Pie OTA is really hitting Canadian LG G6 units this time.

The size of the OTA package is nearly 2 GB, while it carries May security patch (yes, May!). The internal version number is H87330b. We don’t have the complete changelog in hand, but guess they are kinda similar to existing ones.

Users should get home button gestures, slow motion support in camera, game launcher and truckload of other goodies.

Unlike US variants, Canadian LG G6 isn’t locked with the carrier. You can even skip the waiting queue and download the update directly using LG Bridge.

AT&T LG G6 (H871) owners, we have a surprise for you as well. Although the official update tracker is still pointing the H87121m build with February patch as the latest one, the Pie OTA is reportedly rolling out in a widespread manner.

T-Mobile has yet to participate in the game of Pie, but hope they will deliver it within this year. Do let us know if your carrier branded LG G6 is getting the Pie OTA.
