Last week, Honor India promised fans of the Honor Play that a software update would be pushed to the device soon with a new September security patch. True to this, the device is now receiving a new OTA that brings the new security update to the handset.

Honor Play September security update in India

It is not common that you’ll find device makers delivering on their software update promises. For Honor to honor its promise to deliver September patches to the Honor Play is such a great feeling among Honor fans, but of course, no one is perfect.

We’ve heard stories of Honor View 10 and Honor 7X owners who have gone months without a single software update, more so for people in the U.S. where Honor’s mother company is having trouble with the government.

For the lucky Honor Play users in India, the new OTA is coming in bearing EMUI version (C675E2R1P9), up from version (C675E2R1P9). The update weighs in at 238MB, which implies it probably brings more than just the updated September security patch.

From the brief changelog, though, Honor doesn’t go into any details of such add-ons, if any.

The Honor Play has been conspicuously missing from the list of Honor/Huawei devices that will be upgraded to EMUI 10 based on Android 10. This led to questions from concerned users and as it stands, Huawei is still evaluating whether to push the update to the device.

Miles away from India, the same September security update is also rolling out to the Motorola Moto Z3 Play in Brazil. The South American country is Motorola’s darling and usually, it gets more attention than other markets.

The airborne September security update has software version PPWS29.131-27-1-11 and like the Honor Play, it is based on Android 9 Pie. Motorola hasn’t said a thing about if and when the Z3 Play will be upgraded to Android 10, but we are keeping our fingers crossed.

We all know how long OTA updates can take to arrive on all units, which is why Moto Z3 Play users will be glad that we also captured the download link for manual installation. If interested, the fastboot ROM is right below.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
