Xiaomi Mi A1 will go down in history as one of the most instrumental smartphones in the revitalization of Android One at a time when the program was seemingly falling down to its knees.

Unveiled in 2014, Android One didn’t get the traction Google expected from the beginning. Initially, it was largely used by never-heard-of smartphone vendors like Micromax, Spice, Karbonn, Lava, General Mobile, Cherry Mobile, and Infinix Mobility, among others.

Japan’s Sharp came on board in 2016, but it was only joined by General Mobile in releasing the only two Android One phones for the entire year. At this point, things certainly looked bleak until Xiaomi Mi A1 triggered a series of great Android One releases.

HTC and Motorola released the U11 Life and Moto X4 before the end of the year and in 2018, HMD Global broke the news that it will adopt the Android One program for its future smartphones. More recently, Xiaomi Mi A3 joined the party and is expected in India this coming week.

But despite all the upgrades it brings over the Mi A2 and Mi A1, some people are still happy to hang onto their tried and trusted devices at hand. For those still donning the aging Xiaomi Mi A1, there’s a new software update available to keep the device refreshed, secure and good to go.

The update is arriving as build number V10.0.12.0.PDHMIXM and installs the latest Android security patch for August 2019. As evidenced by the firmware version, the underlying OS is Android Pie.

The update is arriving over the air and weighs 67.1MB, which suggests there isn’t much else it brings besides the new security patch level. But this doesn’t mean you should ignore it because the usual bug fixes and system-wide performance improvements are also in there.

OTA updates take time, so be patient as you wait for the download notification on your Xiaomi Mi A1 handset. If you can’t wait, you can try forcing the update via the Settings menu, but be sure you are connected to a stable Wi-Fi network and that the battery level is at least 50% full.

Alternatively, you can grab the OTA file below and upgrade manually.

It’s great to see a 2-year-old entry-level device like the Mi A1 enjoying regular software updates that roll out on time. But this has little to do with Xiaomi and more to do with Android One, the program that was almost dying a couple or so years ago.

What Android One promises is timely software updates and at least two Android OS upgrades. Xiaomi Mi A1 already got two OS upgrades, but there have been some talks of Android Q recently, although we can’t guarantee anything so far.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
