2018 introduced a number of things to the mid-range Android smartphones which were initially reserved for the higher specced models. The rear camera setup saw an increment from single to multiple sensors, while regular 16:9 screens started to phase out in favor of 18:9 or more taller variants.

Redmi Note 5 Pro: First dual camera phone in Redmi Note series

Xiaomi quickly adapted these new design trends, and released Redmi Note 5 Pro (known as Redmi Note 5 in China and Redmi Note 5 AI Dual Camera in other countries) during the Q1 of 2018. However, they did not opt for the notch for this one which was later introduced in Redmi Note 6 Pro.

Apart from the revamped exterior, Redmi Note 5 Pro holds separate records in terms of software development. It is the first Redmi Phone to carry Project Treble support out of the box (after Oreo update to be precise). Two major Android version upgrade in lifetime as a Redmi phone – yes, none other than Redmi Note 5 Pro.

There was a slight hiccup though. The official Pie OTA allegedly rigged with some kind of region verification routine, which began to brick a bunch of Note 5 Pro units which were cross-flashed (e.g. global ROM on Chinese variant and vice-versa).

Usually such restrictions can be bypassed by having an unlocked bootloader, but the enforced checking did not mandate such exceptions. Amidst this chaos, Xiaomi is pushing a new MIUI update via stable branch for global/Indian Redmi Note 5 Pro units.

The 505 MB incremental OTA carries the version number 10.3.2.0 while featuring latest August security patches – similar to Redmi Note 7(S) and Note 7 Pro. That’s a pretty significant jump from May patch level in the previous version.

Xiaomi also incorporated truckload of MIUI features, such as a brand new customizable lock screen clock, the ability of lock Google Contacts and lock screen pocket mode. The full changelog is as follows:

System

– Optimization: Lock screen pocket mode

Lockscreen, status bar, Notification shade
