OnePlus News Daily Dose #73: Zen Mode for OnePlus 6/6T, OnePlus 7 Pro day-one updates, Robert Downey Jr. and more!

In yesterday’s daily dose of OnePlus related news, we talked about some exclusive features present in the 9.5 branch of OxygenOS. This particular build can be only be found in OnePlus 7 series, although the company should eventually bring them to older models.

Talking about new features, OnePlus engineers introduced a new low light optimized photography mode in the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro, dubbed as Nightscape 2.0. They use the inherent pixel binning technique of the camera sensor to grab extra light from the source.

However, Nightscape 2.0 will not come to older models such as OnePlus 6 and 6T due to hardware limitations. The company confirmed this by emailing Android Authority:

Zen Mode will be coming to the 6 and 6T in a future update. Because of a hardware limitation, Nightscape 2.0 will remain exclusive to the 7 series.

Backporting purely software based features should not be a big issue. As a result, Zen Mode will make its way to the OnePlus 6/6T. We are not sure whether OnePlus 5 and 5T are going to get these features via OxygenOS 9.5 update or not, as the OEM did not mention them.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 7 Pro units are getting day-one OTA update across the world.

It seems that the Shenzhen based OEM ditched the idea of unified OTA, as different regions are reportedly receiving separate builds. Even the changelogs are different.

The day-one update brought April security patch level along with a number of fixes. It also unlocked the dedicated gaming mode (‘Fnatic mode’) as well as experimental DC dimming feature.

The release of a new phone is incomplete without the touch of Jerry. Zack Nelson, who is rather popular by his online persona JerryRigEverything, has a special relationship with OnePlus.

Nonetheless, the OnePlus 7 Pro had to go through the workbench of Zack. Fortunately, it passed all the torturous tests of bend, scratch and burn resistance in flying colors.

Besides their controversial stance regarding water resistance, OnePlus actually did a pretty good task to secure the internals of the phone from liquid damage.

At OnePlus, we always aim to doing the right things based on what you really need not the industry, especially when it comes to creating the best possible device. Over the past few years, we’ve seen so many comments from you on our phone’s water-resistance quality. In fact, we’ve never stopped improving our design and going through tests to make sure you can finally experience our water-resistant quality.

Tech YouTuber Matthew Moniz went one step further and submerged his unit in the water for 30 minutes. Want to know the rest? Here you go:

Let’s shift to the OnePlus inbox apps.

Remember when OnePlus announced to redesign their Gallery app? At least some of the glimpses of the changes can now be seen via the updated stock Gallery app in OxygenOS 9.5.

The stock Camera app has also updated with plenty of new features, including completely offline Google Lens integration.

Credit goes to Android Police for their in-depth analysis of the updated Gallery and Camera apps of OxygenOS 9.5. They have uploaded the APKs in APKMirror, so that users with old gen OnePlus phone can sideload them.

Although OnePlus did not bring any ‘AI’ enhancements in their camera app, the Chinese company did integrate Google’s AI driven Assistant in the second generation Bullets Wireless.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is something else – OnePlus finally joined their forces with the creator of the most badass AI, aka Tony Stark himself!

Kidding apart, Robert ‘Iron Man’ Downey Jr. will be next global brand ambassador of the smartphone maker. The Avengers: Endgame actor himself announced the news via his Weibo profile.

Is that a McLaren behind RDJ?

OnePlus, replace Google Assistant with J.A.R.V.I.S.!
