Update (July 16):

Chinese OnePlus 6 has started receiving another update, see the details here.

Original story:

Chinese smartphone company OnePlus has started pushing out a new update to its OnePlus 6 smartphone in its home country China, where OnePlus devices run HydrogenOS. The update bumps the HydrogenOS version of the device to 5.1.10.

As for what’s included in the update, the change-log mentions fix for a gaming-related issue as well as a somatosensory gesture. Here’s the translated change-log:

Given the language barrier and the limited info that the translated version of the change-log reveals, the best we can do is to make some logical guesses.

As the first fix is related to games and screen, the problem of unsupported 18:9 aspect ratio by games (resulting in display being cropped) could have been taken care of by OnePlus. We discussed the issue in detail here (just in case you want to know more about it).

Next comes the somatosensory gesture fix. The change-log indicates the problem the fix caters to screen sensitivity. Given the word ‘double’ in the change-log, it won’t be a stretch to speculate that the update fixes the double tap to wake functionality which hasn’t been sensitive enough (according to a large number of reports we’ve seen so far).

We highlighted the problem in one of our latest stories earlier today. Head here to read more about it.

Moving on, and finally, the update also brings some minor bug fixes and stability improvements. So is that it? What about the massive battery drain OnePlus 6 users have been complaining about after the last update?

Well, while the official change-log doesn’t explicitly say anything about battery issues being fixed. Many Chinese users who installed the 5.1.10 update are reporting a comparatively better battery life.

Here are some of the reports (sorry for the broken language – these are translated versions):

Let’s talk about it, today I carefully observed my usage
1. I do not play games, but like to visit b station to watch video
2. The first 10% of the electricity is not durable, but basically 10% can support more than one hour after 80.
3. Before I update, I usually run for about 6 hours, but after the update I basically use the remaining 20% of the electricity for 8 hours.

After updating 5.1.10, I felt a change of battery

I also think that after the update, I really saved power

Indeed, it feels more power-saving after the update

While that’s no doubt very good news, I’d suggest you all to hold your horses, as the roll out is still in early stages, and is currently limited to China. As we’ve seen previously, a update in China is shortly followed by a global update, so it’s reasonable to say OxygenOS 5.1.10 is coming soon.
