YouTube is the world’s most popular video-sharing platform where more than 1 billion hours of videos are watched every day.

The service was founded in 2005 and within a year, bought by Google for a mere $1.65 billion. Apart from showing advertisements, YouTube generates revenue by offering original and paid content such as movies and TV shows.

But like every other online service, users do encounter bugs and glitches, thanks to the developers constantly updating the app and website with new and experimental features.

Having said that, many recently complained about Ads being disruptive and ruining the overall user experience negatively.

And as it turns out, the troubles don’t end there. Many YouTube subscribers are now reporting (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10) that the playback speed button or option is missing on Smart TVs, Chromecast, and consoles.

Some said they tried clearing the data and cache, removing the app from their devices, and installing it once again but none of these generic solutions fix the problem. Below are some reports from YouTube users who say the playback speed button is missing.

YouTube playback speed button gone overnight!
I woke up to my YouTube today with the playback (speedometer) icon no longer present in the app! I even updated to the latest version through the Play Store and the button is still not there 😭. Can you guys share what version of the app do you age and if y’all are still seeing the button? Appreciate any help and advice on how to get it back! Thank you!

YouTube playback speed
The playback speed option on my Sony Bravia tv just disappeared yesterday. I have two different Bravia tvs that are different models, and it’s on both of them. This feature was just added recently so not sure why they would get rid of it already. Anyone have any insights or solutions? TIA

As it turns out, some people tried to downgrade the app and see if it works but it looks like the button is reportedly missing on previous versions as well.

Thankfully, YouTube has commented on the matter and said they are looking into it. However, they did not share any timeframe on when the problem will be resolved.

We’ve seen similar reports where the playback speed option is missing on the YouTube app on smart TVs, and we’re looking into it.

Update 1 (May 17)

10:54 am (IST): Responding to a user’s query regarding the missing playback button issue, YouTube support said that it’s an experimental feature. This means that it is not a permanent feature and was just available for testing purposes.

Sounds like you’re seeing an experiment feature. Different teams at YouTube often test new ways to make improvements. (Source)
