New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on February 16, 2022) follows:

YouTube is available on many platforms and devices. You can access it through a web browser or using dedicated apps.

Android is one of the platforms that have its dedicated YouTube app which also offers support for Google Chromecast, so you can cast the videos directly to another compatible device.

However, some users are facing issues with YouTube on Android where the app is crashing when casting a video to Google Chromecast (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

YouTube Android app crashing when casting to Google Chromecast

The glitch causes a crashing issue when trying to use Google Chromecast to stream a video from the YouTube Android app. Once the glitch occurs the app closes and the user is returned to the smartphone home screen.

I’m finding that after a few minutes of casting Youtube to my tv using chromecast it cuts off. Iv had my Chromecast for year’s and it never had this problem. Movies, videos, and music work fine but when it comes to YouTube it cuts off. I’d this a YouTube problem or Chromecast?

YouTube crashes when casting from phone

With a recent update to the YouTube phone app, everytime I cast to a CC Ultra or Roku, the YouTube app on my phone (S21) crashes out to homescreen. Going back into the app and reconnecting to the CC then creates very weird behavior with the queue. Anyone else experiencing anything similar?

There are very recent reports about the glitch described above. However, the issue does not appear to be exactly new, as similar situations have been reported for some months now.

A potential workaround to fix the crashing issue

Fortunately there is a potential workaround that reportedly helps mitigate the issue. One of the recommendations is to uninstall YouTube app updates on Android.

I had the same problem, uninstaling the updates or doing a rollback solved the issue but I choose to solve it uninstaling the YT app that came from the Play Store and installing the latest beta version from apkmirror.com (version 16.39.36, the last one from Play Store was the 16.38.38). Working as usual now!

If the above doesn’t work, there is a more specific workaround which consists of uninstalling the standard YouTube app and installing the beta version v16.39.36.

At the moment there does not seem to be an official acknowledgment from Google to this problem. We will update this article if new events related to this topic arise.

Update 1 (September 22, 2022)

05:03 pm (IST): Many Pixel owners are now reporting (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) that the YouTube TV app keeps disconnecting when casting to Google Chromecast after updating to Android 13.

Luckily, support has acknowledged the issue and confirmed that they are working to resolve it. In the meantime, you can try out this workaround suggested by one of those affected.

The only workaround I’ve found on Chromecast Ultra is casting and starting the stream on the tv player, and then force stopping the app on the phone before it disconnects. When I want to change channel or rewind I have to start the app again and reconnect the stream. It’s annoying but it works until a fix gets pushed. (Source)
