In a recent blogpost, Google highlighted how it’s poised to revolutionize the way people approach STEM subjects on their devices. The tech giant announced the introduction of new features across Search and Lens, allowing users to delve into complex math and science concepts more intuitively and effectively. This means, you can transform your Google Pixel phone (or other supported devices) into your personal math and science tutor.
Study math and science using Google Search and Lens
You can now directly enter equations or take a picture with Lens to gain access to step-by-step explanations and solutions. So rather than just getting the answer, you actually get to learn the steps it took. A range of subjects, including trigonometry, calculus, and even word problems in high-school physics are supported. The incorporation of advanced language models enables you to identify both known and unknown values, that should guide you on which formulas to use and when.
So you can now leverage Lens on your Google Pixel phone or even an iPhone to interpret and solve geometry problems that are difficult to articulate through text alone. By capturing images of intricate diagrams, such as those illustrating triangle measurements, the device can generate comprehensive, step-by-step explanations to facilitate understanding and problem-solving.
In addition to these practical applications, Google has also introduced a 3D visualization component within Search. This feature enables users to explore interactive diagrams of over 1,000 biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and related topics. By incorporating detailed 3D models, the user experience becomes more immersive, aiding in the development of a deeper visual understanding of various STEM-related subjects.
In the blogpost, Google says, “with these new and improved features, we hope that people are able to continue to feed their curiosity and learn a few new things along the way.” All I can say here is that I wish I had something similar to assist me when I was in school.
The integration of these new LLMs in Search and Lens are a step in the right direction, however, there’s one big concern that you may have guessed already. The ease of access to Google Search and Lens will make it almost impossible for school teachers to determine whether their students did their own homework. They may find it challenging to discern between authentic student effort and the assistance provided by an advanced AI tool.
Nevertheless, if used responsibly, this can be a powerful tool to have at your disposal. Simply launch the Lens app to get quick answers to your math and science questions. That said, you can check out the official blogpost for more information.
