Here’s the crux of the article in video form:

If you’ve noticed that the custom text tones that you previously set have gone missing after installing iOS 17, then fret not, here are some workarounds to get them back.

This change was first reported by users in iOS 17 RC version after discovering that Apple no longer allows you to set custom-imported ringtones as text tones.

Now, many iPhone users trying set custom text tones are disappointed since this option is still missing even in the stable version.

This was a handy feature that allowed users to identify who’s texting without even looking at the phone.

Some users have noticed that the custom text tones they had set up prior to the update are still functional. However, if you accidentally change or delete these tones, there isn’t an easy way to restore them.

Workarounds for custom text tones missing after iOS 17 update

An individual suggested that exporting a text tone via GarageBand and assigning it to a contact works perfectly.

However, the newly created text tone doesn’t seem to appear in the settings list when selecting a text tone.

Another workaround that users have discovered involves taking basic data from the old Ringtone .plist (/Media/iTunes_Control/iTunes) and adding the lines purchased, album (same data as the name), and media kind.

This process might help you recreate custom text tones.

While iOS 17.0.1 reportedly doesn’t resolve this issue, some users remain hopeful that future updates, like iOS 17.0.2, may provide a fix or possibly revert this change. However, this remains uncertain.

Fortunately, an individual alleged that they reached to Apple support where they were told that this issue is under investigation.
