Following the latest December Feature Drop update, some Pixel users have faced an issue where several status bar icons stop displaying to their full extent, turning into a simple white dot.

Google Pixel status bar icons becoming a white dot for some

According to reports, the status bar on Google Pixel phones is no longer showing all the icons it did before. Instead, the device groups them into a white dot, which is quite inconvenient and uninformative since you cannot know at a glance what options or services you have active.

In the screenshot below (shared by Cintamani the on Pixel support forum) you can see how multiple status bar icons, both on the right and left, are missing from the UI as they are grouped together as a couple of simple white dots, without apparent explanation.

For those affected, the issue occurs when the device is in portrait orientation. If they use the device in landscape orientation, the status bar icons are displayed normally again. So, it seems like a bug where the OS mistakenly detects that there is not enough space in the status bar for all the icons, even though there is.

Issue under investigation; potential workaround

User Scott B suggests that the cause of the bug is a misconfiguration in the ‘Display size’ setting after the Pixel December update. According to this theory, the patch could have set a very large ‘Display size’ value, which increases the size of the UI elements and therefore causes the system to detect that there is not enough space for the status bar icons.

So, as a potential workaround, you can try the following:

  1. Go to your device Settings.
  2. Tap on Display.
  3. Tap on Display size and text.
  4. Reduce ‘Display size’ slider until the status bar icons are visible again.

On the other hand, the dev team is already aware of the issue and is investigating, for which they have asked those affected (through a Google Product Expert) to send screenshots where it is visible. If you are among the people facing the bug, you can post your screenshots in this thread to help speed up a fix rollout.
