Founded by the co-founder and CEO of Opera, Vivaldi Technologies is a company that develops a free-to-use cross-platform web browser called Vivaldi.

With 2.4 million active users, the browser was primarily made for those who disliked Opera’s Presto layout engine and wanted to switch to a Chromium-based solution.

It also happens to be the first browser available on Android Automotive OS, but can be used only when the car is parked. Having said that, many recently reported that the browser was crashing or closing after the v5.2 update.

And while that seems to be fixed, Vivaldi users are now saying that they are unable to change their search engine from Bing after the v5.3 update (1,2,3,4,5).

Some have tried selecting from the list of search engines, resetting their browser settings and reinstalling the app altogether but nothing seems to help.

Here are a bunch of reports from Vivaldi users who are unable to change their search engine provider from Bing after the recent update.

@vivaldibrowser after the last update Bing is the default search engine and I cannot change it, it always changes back, even after resetting to defaults. Why? I hate using bing, escpeccially without planting trees by @Ecosia

Default search changed to Bing after an update and I can’t change it back. Basically what the title says. I’m on Windows 11. The browser just updated itself to 5.3.2679.38, and for some reason Bing is the default search engine. I can’t change it in the search settings. When I go there, I see the list of search engines, but it won’t let me select any of them. I also can’t delete Bing from the list. I can change the image and private search. Has anyone else seen this?

Fortunately, Vivaldi developers were quick to acknowledge the problem and said they are working to fix it. They also shared a workaround that involves disabling all extensions related to search engines and re-enabling them.

Apologies😢. This is a bug that we’re working on. Until a fix, here’s a workaround. Disable all extensions related to search engines. After this, you’ll be able to re-enable them without any issues coming back.

We hope Vivaldi developers soon release an update that fixes the problem and allows users to set search engines apart from Bing.
