The latest Pixel phones, the 8 and 8 Pro, seem to be dropping the ball when it comes to audio quality. Several reports from frustrated users on Reddit and Google support forums detail an issue with the USB DAC not working properly on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, but sadly, it’s not the first time it’s happening.

“Loud static blasting through one channel,” lamented one user, echoing a sentiment shared by several others. Their Moondrop Moon River 2 DAC, which works flawlessly on other devices, became unusable when paired with the Pixel 8. This isn’t an isolated incident; reports describe similar problems with DACs from HiDIZS, Shanling, and others.

Adding to the frustration, a similar issue affected the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro a few years ago, which could hint at a recurring problem. Luckily, it was eventually resolved through a software update, but unfortunately, it seems it has resurfaced once again in the latest Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.

The first reports started appearing soon after the launch of the Pixel 8 phones. But the issue has persisted through several updates with no word from Google, although this is likely due to the niche nature of the problem. Furthermore, Google has been offering huge discounts on Pixel Buds, which means only true audiophiles that still rely on USB DACs are experiencing this glitch.

The fact that a software update addressed this issue should be reassuring for Pixel 8 users. But the cause may not be limited to software. Some theorize that the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro lack an onboard DAC, meaning the adapter itself needs to handle the digital-to-analog conversion. This differs from some other phones where the adapter simply carries an analog signal. As one user explained, “I have 2 from Amazon that work; Anker and Mangotek. Some folks claim that the Apple one works well but cuts the volume a little. There is also the official Google one.”

Whether it’s a software incompatibility or a missing onboard DAC, the silence (or worse, static) from Google on this issue leaves audiophiles in the dark. While some workarounds exist, relying on specific adapters isn’t an ideal solution, especially for a premium phone marketed for its multimedia capabilities.

One can only hope that Google acknowledges the issue soon and provides a fix that allows Pixel 8 and 8 Pro owners to enjoy their external DACs without the current symphony of static, stutters, and silence.
