Twitter 'Subscribe to' notification frustrating users, option to disable it being asked

Twitter made changes to its ‘Super Follows’ feature, which allows users to pay for exclusive content from individual accounts, by rebranding it to simply ‘Subscriptions’.

It appears that the new Subscriptions will have many of the same features, including the ability for account holders to charge users for access to exclusive tweets, subscriber-only Spaces, and special badges.

Twitter’s long-term plan is to potentially expand this feature to include newsletters and other content as well.

However, some Twitter users have reported that they are getting a ‘Subscribe to’ notification that has been annoying them (1,2,3,4,5,6,7).

In order to promote this feature, Twitter is pushing notifications to users inviting them to subscribe to an account that they have not followed or interacted with.

The frequency and amount of these notifications are getting out of hand as well. Users feel that if they like someone’s content they would willingly subscribe to them and don’t need a forced push.

On top of this users keep getting these notifications even when they have selected the ‘see less often’ option.

So I woke up to a notification to subscribe to a Twitter account… I can’t get regular notifications from Twitter but this gets pushed

So, some users have taken to Twitter and Reddit to express their frustration with this feature and are asking for an option to disable it.

Twitter needs to have an option to disable notification for me to subscribe to people, it’s annoying and i only care for notifs if its interaction types

Twitter has yet to respond to these concerns, but it’s clear that the push for subscriptions is causing some tension between the platform and its users.

While the feature has the potential to be a valuable tool for content creators and influencers, Twitter will need to address these concerns and find a way to promote the feature without alienating its user base.
