New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on June 29, 2021) follows:

Almost every Tesla owner must be acquainted with the fact that Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built on or after April 27 this year no longer come with radar.

The trusty radar system has instead been replaced with Tesla Vision – a driver-assist system that relies almost completely on the vehicle’s cameras.

Tesla had justified this move by saying that it is a major step towards level 5 autonomy. However, the newly introduced tech does come with plenty of setbacks.

Firstly, Smart Summon and Emergency Lane Departure Avoidance have been disabled completely.

This is coupled with quite a noticeable reduction in the maximum speed of Autosteer (which helps the Tesla Model Y stay centered in its lane) from 90 mph to 75 mph.

And then there are other issues. We previously highlighted how the no radar model of the Tesla Model Y suffers from issues with vision-only autopilot at night and flashing hi-beam in the rain.

Fortunately, Tesla had planned to restore the missing features as well as iron out the kinks through wireless software updates soon.

While a specific timeline wasn’t provided, it is pretty clear now from the most recent development that the restoration process has already been started.

Elon Musk today responded to a tweet from a user dreaming about that sweet 80 mph spot. The Tesla CEO said that the maximum speed is set to be raised by 5 mph to a modest 80 mph via a production release update coming this week.

Turns out that the previous 75 mph maximum speed limit on the Tesla Model Y was done as a precautionary measure which has now been deemed unnecessary.

So yeah, it is great to see that the new camera-only tech is slowly but surely catching up. Who knows, its capabilities might even exceed the old radar tech with time.

Update 1 (June 30)

05:17 pm (IST): Update 2021.4.18.10 just went live, removing the 75 mph speed limit and restoring smart summon and lane departure assistance.
