Spotify has recently introduced an update that seems to lock ‘Lyrics’ feature behind a paywall, making it accessible only to premium subscribers. Previously, this feature could be accessed by both free and premium users.

The company’s recent move to restrict access to song lyrics has ignited a wave of discontent among Spotify’s userbase.

Spotify ‘Lyrics’ allegedly now a Premium feature

Spotify’s ‘Lyrics’ function has long been a valuable tool for music enthusiasts, allowing them to enhance their overall listening experience.

But after the recent change, whenever a user on the free tier tries to access them, they get a ‘Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium’ message.

And by looking at the reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), it appears that the recent alteration has left many users dismayed, and they are massively criticizing this update.

Some are alleging that the company has made this move only to satisfy its greed for maximizing profits. While others are concerned about whether the paid lyrics feature will provide accurate and timely lyrics or not.

People contend that other services, like Amazon Music, offer offline and more accurate lyrics than Spotify.

One of those impacted has taken a jibe at the company and said that it should also disable background app usage, like YouTube. By doing so, they can prevent free-tier users from accessing the lyrics during playback completely.

Spotify has reportedly started requiring a premium subscription to view lyrics, it is what it is deleting Spotify.

Interestingly, another user claims that they can access lyrics on the mobile app with different accounts. Also, they can view lyrics for different tracks while using the web player, and that too without any prompts.

This made some speculate that the restriction might have been only implemented on a limited number of accounts for now.

Those impacted are now urging the developers to make lyrics accessible on free accounts like before.
