Original story (published on November 02, 2021) follows:

Spotify is one of the most popular audio streaming services around the globe. As of September 2021, it had over 381 million monthly active users with 172 million paying subscribers.

This service is heavily used by iPhone and Android users alike, the reason being its wide range of songs and podcasts along with an intuitive UI that makes it easy to use.

Well, being software, bugs may appear often and Spotify is no exception. Some Spotify users have recently complained of an invalid address error preventing them from adding addresses for sale tax collection.

And now, a new bug has come to light where some Spotify users on iOS are suddenly getting redirected to Safari whenever they try to play any audio.

Every time they open Spotify, it automatically takes them to Safari where it prompts users to download the app, and then it gets redirected to the App Store.

Here are some reports for reference:

This just started today, and its really frustrating. Basically I open the app, and it immediately sends me to safari. Songs still play in the background, but I cant go back to the app without it redirecting me. Ive tried reinstalling and updating but nothing has helped. Any suggestions? (Source)

Every time I open the spotify app it automatically takes me to an endless loop of opening safari, which asks “open in spotify?” If i select yes, the loop starts all over. I’ve tried deleting the app, I’ve tried deleting instagram and snapchat on the offchance there was a faulty link i clicked, but nothing seems to work. I can’t do a full reinstall because spotify won’t even let me open the app. Please help! (Source)

This bug is likely affecting iOS users, as we haven’t come across any reports from those using Spotify on Android. Also, it seems widespread owing to the number of reports doing rounds.

Those affected have tried workarounds like re-installing Spotify, deleting the other app that causes redirection and clearing cache/data, but nothing seems to work.

Fortunately, Spotify has acknowledged this bug and said that it has been escalated to the relevant team for further investigation.
