Although Soundtoys 5 officially supports various platforms, its compatibility with the new M1 MacBooks has been in question for a while now.

Not just Soundtoys but the story has more or less remained the same for a bunch of other apps as well. The new MacBooks run on Apple’s in-house M1 chipset which is based on the ARM architecture.

Every OEM in this domain builds machines based on Intel’s x86 architecture and therefore, every software in use is only compatible with this architecture.

The world and software makers weren’t yet ready with ARM-compatible counterparts of their software. For this very reason, a concept called Rosetta had to be introduced.

Rosetta converts the x86-based codes to ARM-based codes which allows most of the applications to run flawlessly on the new MacBooks.

But even Rosetta doesn’t assure total compatibility, at the end of the day it is the software makers who have to re-build applications to be able to run on the new M1 chipset-powered MacBooks.

Well, good for the MacBook M1 users as a lot of software companies are coming forward to accept the transition.

Soundtoys 5 is also on the move to become ARM-compatible as mentioned in the support section of its website for the new Apple M1 MacBooks. There’s no ETA though.

* Intel only, official support for Apple Silicon M1 is in progress.

As per the user reports, Rosetta doesn’t seem to work in this case and there seems to be no other option but to wait for the official support to arrive.
