The Google Photos app recently went through a massive UI overhaul. There used to be a dedicated “For you” tab that contained suggestions like rotations, stylized images and the like which is now removed.

The app appears much more modern and polished now. Not many new features were added, but things have certainly moved around a bit. However, some users don’t seem to be too happy with the removal of the “For you” tab:

Please return for you section back to mobile app, Thank you !!!! You can remove upper line from previous years. Mobile app redesign is awful. Please get back at least for you section, or notify my when you create a new collage from years ago on my app in mobile.

The missing of “For You” from the mobile apps is a big disappointment to me. I love to see all the recommendations Google made on my phone, not from my laptop. Please have it back to the app.

The “For you” tab was firstly removed on the mobile app leading its users to access it via the Google Photos desktop website. However, it has recently been removed from there too.

This change isn’t something that has happened under the radar though. Google announced it in June 2020 along with numerous other changes in Photos on their official website:

We’ve also moved our automatic creations–like movies, collages, animations, stylized photos and more–from the “For you” tab (which is now gone) and into Memories. And we know that not all memories are worth revisiting, so you’ll be able to hide specific people or time periods, and you have the option to control what types of Memories you receive

Users must understand that this re-design doesn’t mean that the tab along with all the features that it offered is now gone. The redesign is just a reorganization of sorts and the tab’s features are now available in other places:

In New Updated version of Google Photos you may see slight change in the interface. But No Worries. you will still be able get Stylized photo feature. Open Photos > Select Library > Select Utilities. From here you can create movies, animations, collage, Stylized photo…etc

Google may still make auto creations of your photos, we just had a panorama created from a series of images yesterday, for example.

On the new version of Photos, visit the Library > Utilities section to locate auto creations. If you receive a notification of a creation, and have saved it to your library, you can find these via the search function. Select search, scroll down to Creations and select it.

And yes, as previously suggested, go to Photos > Profile icon > Settings to make sure your preferences are set for creating memories, etc, as you wish.

This redesign of the “For you” feature may seem uncomfortable for most given the fact that most of its features are now under various subsections, rather than having their own dedicated tab.

However, various suggestions will be made available via notifications. Those suggestions can then be saved via the notifications itself.

It might seem inconvenient if the user swipes them away mistakenly, but the suggestions will still be available under the “utilities” section to be examined later.

Other suggestions will be available on the Photos main tab itself at the top under “Recent highlights.”

That being said, let us know your thoughts about the removal of the Google Photos “For you” tab or the UI revamp itself in the comment section below.
