New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on December 15, 2021) follows:

Sea of Thieves is a popular multiplayer game that takes place in a world with a pirate-theme, and whose scenarios are procedural, so that each game is a different experience.

But, in the last few days, many players report that there are some severe performance problems. These cause the game to constantly get stuck.

More specifically, the freezing issues in Sea of Thieves (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) are related to the achievement notifications.

Sea of Thieves is freezing every few seconds for many players

According to multiple reports, Sea of Thieves is freezing for many players. This occurs when trying to join a game, or during a game if the player was able to access one.

Anyone else lagging really hard?

OMG I’ve been trying for like two hours to play but no matter if I try open crew or closed, gally or sloop, I just keep freezing, rubberbanding all over, and lagging. I even uninstalled and reinstalled and no difference. This sucks, I just want to play! I’m bored.

According to reports, nothing that affected gamers try to resolve the issue helps. Not even the complete uninstallation and reinstallation of the game.

I am having the same issues and I’ve tried everything I can think of. I’ve rebooted my computer, updated my NVIDIA drivers, paused all updates, closed all background tasks, nothing helps. Constantly freezing and cannot move at all. It’ll sometimes unfreeze for 5-10 seconds then just freeze up again.

Freezes are quite annoying because they happen every few seconds. So, for many, Sea of Thieves is currently unplayable.

Developers are aware, achievement notifications are the cause

Sea of Thieves developers are already aware of reported issues. And, they shed more light on the source of the freezing problems in the game.

It appears that this occurs due to the notifications received for achievements achieved. So, the Sea of Thieves team temporarily disabled those notifications while working on a fix.

We have identified an issue with achievements causing some players to experience freezing when joining a game. We are temporarily disabling achievement notifications to address this. Progress is still being tracked and achievements earned will be awarded once they’re re-enabled.

Notably, only notifications for achievements are disabled, but progress is still being tracked. That is, players will receive their pending achievements when the issues are resolved.

At the moment, the affected players can only wait for the fix not to take long to arrive. We will update this article if there is any related development in the next few days. So, stay tuned.

Update 1 (December 17)

01:46 pm (IST): Sea of Thieves support team has confirmed that the freezing issue when joining that game still persists and they have disabled the Achievement notifications until further notice.

Moreover, the players will be awarded newly earned achievements once they are enabled. That said, we’ll keep you posted on further development.
