It’s been a few weeks since Samsung launched the Galaxy S24 Ultra and a lot of us were eager to see how the display stacked up to the Pixel 8 Pro. After all, Google’s flagship bagged the top spot in DxOMark’s display leaderboard. While both phones boast impressive screens, the S24 Ultra’s advancements in brightness, motion handling, and touch responsiveness tipped the scales in its favor according to DxOMark’s in-depth analysis.
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra vs Google Pixel 8 Pro display comparison
I’ve created the table below to compare the DxOMark scores between the Galaxy S24 Ultra and the Pixel 8 Pro for quick reference. Check it out below.
Category | Google Pixel 8 Pro | Galaxy S24 Ultra |
---|---|---|
Readability | 162 points | 161 points |
Color | 164 points | 148 points |
Video | 156 points | 152 points |
Motion | 138 points | 156 points |
Touch | 160 points | 162 points |
Artifacts | 121 points | 148 points |
Both phones excel in readability, with the Pixel 8 Pro holding the top spot and the S24 Ultra coming in a close second. This means both offer exceptional outdoor visibility, even under direct sunlight. However, the S24 Ultra’s brighter screen (2572 nits vs. 2100 nits) and anti-reflective glass give it a slight edge in challenging conditions.
When it comes to color accuracy, the Pixel 8 Pro shines with the highest score in DxOMark’s database. While the S24 Ultra exhibits improved color rendering compared to its predecessor, it still falls short of the Pixel’s vibrancy and consistency, especially at angles.
Motion performance is where the S24 Ultra takes the lead. Its flawless frame management and adaptive refresh rate ensure butter-smooth video playback without judder. Touch interactions also see a significant improvement, offering better accuracy and faster response times compared to both the Pixel 8 Pro and the S23 Ultra.
Despite its superior motion handling, the S24 Ultra falters in video viewing experience. Due to its extreme brightness, watching content in low-light environments can be uncomfortable on the eyes. This puts it behind the Pixel 8 Pro, which maintains a more balanced approach for both bright and dim lighting conditions.
The Verdict
With a slight edge in three key areas – readability (with some caveats), motion, and touch – the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra emerges as the overall winner in DxOMark’s display ranking. The Galaxy S24 Ultra bagged an overall score of 155 points whereas the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8 sit at 154 points. However, the Google Pixel 8 Pro remains a formidable contender, boasting class-leading color accuracy and a more versatile video experience. Ultimately, the “best” display depends on your individual priorities and viewing habits. At the end of the day, unless you compare both screens side-by-side, you’ll be satisfied with either of the two.
