Original story (published on Feb. 10, 2023) follows:

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was the benchmark for Android flagships in 2022 as it launched earlier in the year with standout features such as a Nightography camera mode and a battery that lasts all day.

While the device holds its ground even today, it hasn’t aged flawlessly. Some users have been reporting that the device has been overheating abnormally.

Samsung Galaxy S22 units overheating for some

In recent months, a section of Samsung Galaxy S22 users has been reporting (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) overheating issues with their units.

This has raised some concern among consumers, particularly since the problem appears to have arisen after the Android 13 (One UI 5.0) update.

Most of the reports have come from S22 Ultra users, but some claim it impacts the standard S22 units too.

According to these reports, the overheating is accompanied by abnormal battery drain, leading some to suspect that a rogue app or process could be running in the background, causing the problem.

One of the users got their phone’s motherboard changed and it seems to curb some issues including that of overheating.

However, no definitive causes have been determined yet, and it’s unclear if Samsung is aware of the problem.

It’s worth noting that the overheating is not affecting all S22 users, and the problem does not seem to be widespread.

This could be due to the fact that ambient temperatures are typically low at this time of year in most regions, which may be why the problem has not been more widely reported.

Despite this, the overheating issue is definitely a cause for concern, and Samsung is expected to address the problem with the upcoming One UI 5.1 update.

That said, it’s worth pointing out that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 powering a section of S22 devices runs hot at times. Therefore, there shouldn’t be any reason to fret.

In the meantime, affected users can monitor their usage patterns and consider uninstalling any suspicious apps or processes that may be causing the overheating.

Until then, keep tabs on this story as we will update it with further developments if any.
