At the recently concluded MWC 2024 event in Barcelona, Samsung revealed exciting details about the upcoming Galaxy Ring health tracker, among them battery specs, weight, features and even supported devices. The Galaxy Ring boasts an impressive battery life of five to nine days, cleverly packed within a design that weighs a mere 2.3g – 2.9g.
Importantly, Samsung confirmed in an interview with CNET that it will be expanding Galaxy Ring compatibility beyond its own devices. In addition to Galaxy phones, the company is actively working to ensure Galaxy Ring support for Google Pixel phones and other non-Galaxy Android devices. This opens up the Ring’s potential user base significantly as Samsung looks to bite a piece of Oura’s cake in the smart ring category.
Samsung also revealed an exciting integration between the Galaxy Ring and its smartwatches. The two devices can work in tandem, intelligently handing off data or combining metrics for enhanced health tracking. This means users don’t have to choose between a smartwatch and the Galaxy Ring.
Unfortunately, at this time, compatibility with iPhones doesn’t seem to be on the roadmap. Samsung’s Hon Pak expressed hope that the caliber of devices like the Galaxy Ring might eventually entice iPhone users to switch to Android. Whether this will be enough to lure iOS users over to Android remains to be seen, but interested folks in Apple’s camp are already dreaming of owning an Apple Ring.
In fact, reports are already doing rounds that Apple has plans to develop a fitness ring that would take on the Galaxy Ring and the likes of Oura Ring. However, this is just a rumor that Apple has yet to confirm. Still, if it does materialize, Samsung may eventually be forced to add the iPhone to the list of devices compatible with the Galaxy Ring.
