While Google Pixel users have enjoyed the peace of mind of car crash detection for years, Samsung Galaxy owners are only now catching up. The Korean tech giant is reportedly working on bringing the potentially life-saving feature to some of its high-end smartphones, including the Galaxy S24 series and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Car crash detection was initially pioneered by Google, but it’s becoming increasingly common, with Apple incorporating a similar feature beginning with its iPhone 14 series.

According to insights from Mishaal Rahman, Samsung is in the works to integrate the Car Crash Detection feature into some of its premium models, including the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, Galaxy S24 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Fold 5. While the current One UI 6.1 version doesn’t seem to host this capability, there are indications that Samsung might introduce the feature with the anticipated One UI 7.0 update later this year. This move highlights the growing importance of safety technology in smartphones. The feature works works by analyzing data from various sensors, such as the accelerometer, gyroscope, and microphone, to detect sudden changes in movement and sound that might indicate a collision.

For the unaware, Google was the first to introduce car crash detection in 2019 with the Pixel 3, and the feature has since been refined and improved in subsequent Pixel models. It can automatically call emergency services, send your location, and even silently share it with first responders, providing crucial assistance in critical situations. Samsung’s car crash detection implementation, however, is still under development and may not be as comprehensive as Google’s. It’s unclear whether it will offer features like silent location sharing or support for international emergency numbers. Additionally, the feature is currently only expected on select high-end models, which will likely leave many Galaxy users without access.

Despite the limitations and late arrival, Samsung’s decision to embrace car crash detection is a welcome step forward. The more smartphones equipped with this technology, the safer our roads will be. Hopefully, Samsung will continue to refine its implementation and make it available on a wider range of devices in the future.

As car technology evolves and becomes more integrated with our smartphones, features like car crash detection will undoubtedly play an increasingly important role in keeping us safe on the road. It’s encouraging to see tech giants like Google, Apple, and now Samsung prioritizing this critical technology, and hopefully, it won’t be long before it becomes a standard feature on all smartphones.
