Players of the evergreen MMORPG, RuneScape, are expressing their concerns about the game’s potential nerf to the ritual disturbance XP of the Necromancy Combat Skill.

Several players on RuneScape’s official subreddit have shared their opinions. They shared why these changes could significantly impact the game:

With the 50% ritual exp nerf coming up I wanted to talk about the Boss exp nerf again. 25exp/1k hp is simply too low. The majority of bosses should be brought up to speed with 50exp/1k. Getting 200k combat exp/h from afking a low rank boss is not OP or even close to meta exp as far as combat methods go. I can’t mass together 20 Arch-Glacors or Herman the Worms to kill at a time. Necromancy is at its core a combat skill, and so for the majority of XP to come from somewhere other than combat feels off, but the solution isn’t stick (nerfing ritual XP), it’s carrot (buffing the recently-nerfed combat XP). The decision to nerf combat XP, just as a new combat skill comes out did feel a bit odd, but I guess I understood the underlying reasoning. (Source)

In a recent Twitch stream, Mod Luma, a member of RuneScape’s development team, dropped a significant hint.

According to her, upcoming patches and updates for RuneScape might include a 50% nerf to the Ritual Disturbance XP of Necromancy combat skill.

Rituals are non-combat skilling activities within Necromancy. It is situated in the City of Um within the Underworld.

During a Ritual, there’s a chance for a disturbance to occur. Which offers more XP and intriguing items.

As the primary means of gaining XP for Necromancers, players are concerned (1, 2, 3, 4) that altering this feature could disrupt the balance of the Combat skill.

How to counter the ritual disturbance XP nerf in RuneScape?

As news of the potential nerf circulated through the community, some players suggested that any changes should also come with corresponding buffs.

Players recommended that if Disturbance XP is nerfed, then the XP gained from Rituals should be boosted.

Just killing disturbance XP but leaving ritual XP rates untouched is just going to nuke rituals unless players need a specific item. (Source)

In terms of gameplay, there’s no concrete reasoning as to how this change would enhance the player experience.

However, a devoted fan of the game suggested that the change might have been influenced more by business considerations.

From a business perspective, I can understand that Jagex would want the the content they have invested countless Dev hours into to last as long as possible (the longer it takes, the longer people will stay engaged and therefore subscribed).. and so, there’s some business logic to nerfing XP rates (combat previously, skilling now). This speculation hinges on the idea that reducing skilling features might encourage players to remain more engaged. Increasing their play time.

Consequently, this would lead to longer subscription periods and increased revenue.

Nevertheless, all of this is fan speculation. There haven’t been any new official statements from the team regarding this matter.

We’ll keep track of the situation and post an update if and when there are any further developments on the matter.
