Rumors and confusions surrounding Showbox app currently

Showbox was in news late last month when it came to light the popular Android app has stopped working completely. Given that a similar free streaming app MovieBox (for iOS) got shut down nearly the same time, the situation surrounding Showbox quickly gave birth to rumors that the app is being shut down as well.

Add to this the ongoing legal issues the app and its distributors have been dealing with for months, everyone was pretty much convinced the app is gone. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the app developers confirmed in the first week of December that the service is back.

But after this week of uncertainty – spanning November end and December beginning – which the app went through, a lot of things changed for users. For example, despite developers coming out publicly to announce that Showbox is back, a lot of users still aren’t aware of this development.

And if that’s not enough, given the media coverage (2) on how using Showbox can land you (yes you, the end user) in legal trouble, it’s reasonable to assume a significant number of existing users would now be worried about their safety.

If you take a look at over Reddit, you’ll find multiple threads discussing an ongoing rumor that Feds now have control over the app’s servers and they are actively monitoring users of the app.

Though this rumor is currently baseless, what adds more fuel to this fire is the fact that websites distributing the Showbox app have been showing warnings similar to the following:

Show Box is NOT a legitimate software platform for viewing Copyright protected movies. If you use ShowBoxApp to view copyrighted movies, the movie studios may be able to see your IP address and your viewing history. Using ShowBox App to watch copyright protected movies, for which you do not have a license, is illegal and subjects you to liability for copyright infringement. Movie studios are cracking down on illegal downloading and are filing lawsuits against users of ShowBox app. Websites that promote and/or distribute ShowBox are also being pursued by the movie studios for promoting illegal activity. It is not worth the trouble!

Also for what it’s worth, @realshowbox, which claims is the official ShowBox Twitter account, said the day the app was back that users should access the service through VPN to avoid legal issues.

But a few days later the account tweeted no VPN is required now, without offering any explanation on their change in stance.

Some users are still willing to take the risk, but many among them are not sure where to download the latest updated app from, despite @realshowbox Twitter account publicly endorsing Aptoide.
