While it might not be true for all global markets, the Google Pixel 7a is still one of the best budget-friendly smartphones on the market right now. However, this is expected to change in the coming months when Google takes the wraps off the phone’s successor, the Pixel 8a. And if the latest rumors are to be trusted, the Pixel 8a might not be the only budget phone coming next year. Apparently, Nothing is working on its own version of a budget phone that will allegedly be called the Nothing Phone 2a.

Nothing already has two flagship models, with the Nothing Phone 2 the most recent release. But according to tipster Sanju Choudhary, the company is setting its sights on the mid-range market with the purported Nothing Phone 2a. Choudhary revealed some details about the alleged device, mentioning a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with a punch hole cutout at the display’s top center.

While specifics beyond this are scarce, a leaked rear image accompanies the information, hinting at a design that doesn’t stray much from what we already know about Nothing phones. We also have the potential model number alongside what the phone could be called, although none of this is official just yet.

Nothing and Carl Pei haven’t given out any major hints about an upcoming Phone 2a. However, another tipster, Abhishek Yadav, recently reported that a new Nothing phone has been registered with regulators in India, hinting at an imminent launch. This further adds more weight to the previous reports, although I recommend taking this with a grain of salt until Nothing or Carl confirms any of these rumors.

The pricing strategy for the Nothing Phone 2a remains undisclosed, but given the $599 price tag on the Nothing Phone 2, a much budget-friendlier positioning is expected, possibly rivaling the upcoming Google Pixel 8a expected in the middle of the next year.

Nothing already has an affordable line of products (earbuds and smartwatches) under the CMF branding. But it appears the Nothing Phone 2a won’t bear the CMF label. Either way, the latest developments suggest Nothing is poised to enter the competitive budget-friendly segment with a bang, and it’s likely happening this coming January.
