[Updated] BBC iPlayer on Roku not working or throwing 'error code 02056' message, issue under investigation

Used by millions worldwide, Roku offers powerful feature-packed media streaming devices at an affordable price.

In the first quarter of 2021, it had more than 61.3 million monthly active users in the United States alone, which is impressive considering they doubled their user base in a span of just two years.

That said, Roku allows users to watch content from their preferred streaming services and apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

However, recent reports from Roku users suggest that BBC iPlayer is not working or throwing error code 02056. Neither Live TV nor recorded programs are working.

I have the same problem with a ROKU Premier model 3920X and your cure does not work. I also added a cold boot and a second warm reboot. I also have a ROKU 3 Now TV streamer and this does not have a problem and there is no problem streaming BBC iPlayer to an iPad. I get the same 02056 error when trying to start any BBC iPlayer stream. There seems no way to report this issue directly to ROKU unless they read these posts.

As it turns out, Roku yesterday pushed an update that was to fix the very same issue.

Thanks for contacting us to report issues using BBC iPlayer on your Roku device. We have spoken to Roku and we are hopeful that recent issues should be resolved by an update from Roku. This was rolled out gradually, but we believe it should now be complete. Please check for updates on your device. If you are experiencing further issues after this update, please get back to us with the model and whether you are using an imported device.

But a day later after many users reported BBC iPlayer was still not working on Roku, they added it back to the list of bugs and issues under investigation.

We are aware of some reports of streaming issues on some Roku devices. Roku released an update over the weekend which has resolved the problem for a number of users, however we’re aware of some reports which indicate that the issue is on-going. We’re continuing to investigate this with Roku.

06:51 pm (IST): BBC has confirmed that Roku has released an update that resolves this issue for many users. However, some users are still having this problem. Moreover, BBC and Roku are working on a definitive fix.
