Categories in Google Messages are designed to simplify messaging experience, however, some users are reporting that categories that help them sort their messages are suddenly missing.

They automatically sort your text messages into two separate tabs: one for personal messages and another for business-related ones. This helps you keep your conversations organized and easy to access.

Google Messages Categories missing

But for some users, the Categories feature has vanished from their Google Messages app.

Instead of neatly sorted tabs, they’re now seeing all their messages bundled together in a single tab. This can be frustrating, especially if you rely on this feature to keep your communication in order.

Recently, some beta users also reported Categories missing from the app. However, the issue got resolved in the later beta version. And now, stable users are encountering the same problem.

Here are some reports for reference:

Before switching from S22 to S23, my messages were separated into a “personal” tab and a “business” tab. I cannot find a way to do that now, and ALL of my texts are in one big group now. Any ideas? (Source)

Earlier I had an option under message organization to catwgorize my messages into personal and business. Now all of a sudden it’s vanished. Why did that happen and when is the feature coming back? (Source)

The good news is that a product expert has acknowledged this issue and confirmed that Google is working on a replacement for the Categories feature.

This suggests that a replacement for Categories may be on the way. However, they didn’t share any details on the exact timeframe and what the replacement will bring for end users.
